Security & data handling

Know where your footage goes.

FrameQuery combines cloud analysis with search on your device. Here is what gets processed, what stays local, and what changes when you share.

Updated 7 September 2026

Local search

Search an existing index on your device, including offline.

Cloud analysis

Selected frames and audio are sent for indexing.

Local recognition

Face and voice matching run on your computer.

What happens to each kind of data

Original footageYour storage
Indexing reads your original files on your computer. The app extracts selected frames and audio locally, so indexing does not require uploading your original video files.
Selected frames & extracted audioCloud analysis
Selected frames are sent for visual analysis and extracted audio for transcription. Indexing requires an internet connection; it is not an entirely offline process.
Transcripts & scene metadataCloud results, local search
Analysis results are returned to your local library for searching. Processing results are also retained in the cloud for a limited period, as described in our privacy policy.
Face & voice recognitionOn your device
Recognition and matching run locally. Stored face and voice templates receive application-level encryption. Frames and audio sent for indexing can still contain faces and voices; local recognition does not anonymise those uploads.
Shared indexes & review mediaDepends on how you share
Exporting an index creates a file you can distribute yourself. Cloud-hosted sharing and review upload data and playable video proxies for recipients. Face and voice embeddings are excluded from shared indexes.

What encryption covers

Face and voice templates in the biometric database, and stored face thumbnails, are encrypted on your device. This does not encrypt your entire library: ordinary metadata, source media and the derived biometric matching index are not encrypted by FrameQuery.

Use your organisation's device access controls and full-disk encryption to protect those local files. Connections to FrameQuery's production services use HTTPS. Cloud storage protection is separate from encryption of files on your computer.

Providers & retention

Cloud analysis uses service providers, including Google Cloud and Vertex AI. The privacy policy lists processing locations by service, including US transcription. FrameQuery does not use your footage to train its own AI models.

Temporary analysis files, processing results and media you choose to host have different retention periods. Cleanup safeguards can retain temporary files beyond the end of a job. Local copies remain under your control.

See the provider list and processing locations and the retention schedule for the details. Our Data Processing Addendum describes the terms for processing customer personal data.

Your controls

Choose what you process

Select the footage you want to index. Before using client material, confirm that the selected cloud-processing and sharing workflow fits your project’s requirements.

Manage recognition and analytics

Face and voice recognition have a separate consent flow. Optional desktop analytics can be disabled in Settings. Your choice about analytics is separate from the processing needed to index footage.

Keep your local index

Searching an existing local index remains free after your processing subscription ends. Cloud indexing, hosted previews and review services have their own connectivity, plan and retention requirements.

Request deletion or export

Use the account and data controls in the app, or contact us for help. The privacy policy explains deletion windows and retention for processing results, hosted media and account data.

Reviewing FrameQuery for your team?

Send us your storage, confidentiality and supplier requirements. We can walk through the relevant workflow before you process client footage. Start with a sample your team has approved for the test.

To report a vulnerability, email security@framequery.com with the affected version and steps to reproduce it. Please keep client footage and credentials out of the initial report. For product help, contact support@framequery.com. Service availability is shown on our status page.
